Since I don't use a GPS, I don't know for sure, but common sense would be to use that recommended by the company that made the unit!
IF I need them, I usually buy topo maps from either a Local store in the area I need them for or from the Government.
Sometimes, libraries may also have them, and there is usually a print shop that can copy these large sheets fairly reasonable.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX and I use the Mapsource Topo map for the entire US. It allows you to search for places on the computer and then send the area to the GPS. It also lets you create waypoints and routes that you can also send. The map is less detailed on the computer screen than it is on the actual GPS but it helps since you're not trying to do everything on a 2 inch screen. Hope this helps!

i in my opinion use a Garmin Rino a hundred and twenty for mapping trails; yet any GPS with a monitoring potential will do. i flow out to the direction and turn monitoring on. Then I come returned to my pc and used nationwide Geographic's TOPO! application and import the gps music. nationwide Geographic's recent version of their application is composed of three-D perspectives only like the Delorme.
