Moost of the dealers in my area base their value of of two things. The first is off of NADA.
http://www.nada.com/
The second is what the market is bring for that machine in that area. For instance using a snowmobile instead of a ATV. A sled is going to get a higher resale value in Alaska than let's say Florida. Just because of the market. The area I live about 80% of the ATV's are 4x4 utilities machines. But get over to Arizona the sport quad market is higher. So take a look at the local listing in the paper, Craigslist or even eBay to get a idea on what the general value of your machine is.
The take into consideration any accessorie that you might have put on it. Some can raise the value. But keep in mind some can actually depreciate it too. Fancy wheels, tires factory added on seem to increase the value. But sometimes the performace goodies can give the impression that the machine could have been beat. Or going back to the 4x4 machines slapping a snorkle kit on can say the same thing.

In those situations in spite of the undeniable fact that the result's worth it, alongside with plenty found out alongside the way.
